Orangery & Refurbishment

After 3 years in the planning, we are thrilled to announce that we have received approval for our planning application for an amazing 50 seat orangery.

Orangery & Refurbishment

Having worked tirelessly throughout the hottest summer in living memory,  we are delighted to announce that we hope to complete the building of our beautiful orangery by Christmas.

The glass fronted orangery will be built between the current building and the lawn, with bi fold doors overlooking the garden, and will accommodate around 50 covers, a brand new loo block, a new private dining room and an extended bar area.

The orangery will feature as its centrepiece a stunning, open kitchen, with a 4 tiered rotisserie, Argentine parrilla grill and a pizza oven.

We are all thrilled about this incredibly exciting new chapter to our story and very much hope you will all be part of it.

We are all so grateful for your continued patience, tolerance  and understanding whilst we undergo the works, and apologise again for our appearance.

The ever popular front terrace is still very much open but PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BACK GARDEN WILL NOW BE CLOSED TO GUESTS UNTIL THE NEW YEAR so that the builders can construct the orangery.

Architect’s Plans

The amazing Gotelee Orchard-Lisle have been the architects on the project, and have done an incredible job. As one can imagine on a project of this size and difficulty, and with a building as heavily listed as this is, they have navigated several seemingly insurmountable hurdles and unsolvable problems to arrive at what we all feel will be a beautiful end result.

Drone Tour

In an effort to keep you all in the loop about every aspect of the project, we have hired the wonderful Jim Cossey to video the building works from a drone, providing amazing images and updates from a broader perspective. He will update the videos throughout the project.

Orangery & Refurbishment

Refurb Blog

Out with the old…

Exciting times ahead… so the new bar has been made offsite, the first kitchen wall has been built and the steels for the orangery are up! Our gin still has been made and we’re in talks about when we’re going out foraging for those local botanicals (obviously the arguments have started about who’s going… someone’s got to stay and man the pub!) Continuing with the alcoholic theme of this blog post we’ve recently changed beer suppliers and have had some great feedback on it. We now stock beer from Ramsbury brewery and it seems to be going down well!

The old bar will be dismantled very soon and the new one should be up and running by early November. Around about the same time we’re hoping the roof will be on the orangery, the main dining room will be getting it’s makeover and the brand-new toilets will be opening. The new kitchen is scheduled to be open a little later in November and the orangery mid-December so a busy few months are coming! Fingers crossed this heatwave lasts just a little longer.

Four months in

Where has the time gone!? If you haven’t visited us lately, you need to… wow, the garden looks so different! The old storage ‘sheds’ have been knocked down, so many new walls have gone up and the levelling of the new orangery site has started. The outside wall of Rob’s old office has been knocked down too, so he’s officially homeless! The outside walls are up on the new toilet block so you can’t see the progress in there, but trust us… it’s really taking shape.

We are doing our best to stay open during all the works and do hope you can bear with us as our appearance changes. Later this month the building of the new kitchen begins, and once those walls are up the work will feel a lot more contained. With this summer proving never-ending (we’re not complaining, honest!) it really has been essential for us to keep it accessible to you all.

Sunshine & showers

Are we in West Berkshire or the Sahara? Hats off to our fabulous builders, who despite this crazy heatwave (we’re not complaining… honest!) they have worked tirelessly. So much so, that we now have walls being built! The walls you can see are those of the new private dining room, which is really starting to take shape. In fact, we thought so much had changed that we got Jim back this week to film another drone video and take a few shots of the progress from his last visit. We’re thrilled with how much of a change it shows and can’t wait to get him back already!

Our ‘world-famous’ new loo block is also coming along, so Rob & Ali have been in discussions this week about the décor, fixtures & fittings in there … we even have a mood board! I wonder if any of you have had any experience with a build yourself? For us it’s felt very slow to begin with, until these past couple of week. It suddenly feels like we’ve really hit the ground running and everything is kicking off … a bit like England in the World Cup! It’s all good though, all fun and all very exciting …

Pull up a chair

This is probably our most exciting blog post yet … it seems that suddenly so much is happening! Rob, Andrea & Alicia took a trip over to Oxford this week to the prestigious ‘Bampton Design’ to choose the all-important piece de resistance for the orangery… the chairs! I’m pleased to report a decision has been made and the chairs have been ordered… hooray! Just the finishing touches left to sort – the shade of wood and the fabric are still to be confirmed but we’re almost there.

Separately the internals of the kitchen are also coming together. We’ve chosen the material for the pass, the pizza oven has been ordered and the rotisserie is in the process of being made. The dry stores are getting knocked down next week so hopefully our team of Chefs will be in their temp kitchen very soon! This not may sound very glamorous but once there in it means the old kitchen can get knocked down, and our shiny new one can start being built! We’ll leave you with the thought of our mouth-watering pizzas being ever closer to reality….

Better foundations than kate nash

The underpinning has finally been completed, and the foundations are starting to be laid … woohoo! You can begin to see where walls will be going for the new private dining room and with any luck, we can soon move on to the next stage of the refurb and start building the brand new loo block!

Even more exciting than wheelbarrows of cement and tons of breeze blocks, is the fact that Rob has now paid the deposit for the £18k board room tables. These bespoke tables are made from German oak, and will be a stunning focal point in our brand new, top of the range conference room. With the help of our amazing interior designer, the lovely Ali Hamilton, they’ve been busy choosing all sorts … doors, ironmongery and all manner of other furnishings. We not only have tables for the conference room but sofas & coffee tables for the lobby also. We can’t wait to share with you our pieces, mood boards & pantones but for now it’s all under wraps I’m afraid!

Growth depends on a few walls coming down

After what feels like the world’s longest wait, we are finally knocking down walls! (Obviously, by ‘we’ I mean the royal we, i.e. the builders… don’t worry they haven’t let any of us loose with a mallet … could you imagine!?). It’s a bitter-sweet moment for all of us to be honest……seeing walls of our beloved pub being knocked down came with a few emotions, but it’s quite a big step forward to us actually seeing a difference and making room for the new orangery. Don’t worry, the garden is still fully accessible and all building/demolition work is fenced off and cleverly disguised behind green netting.

In other news, samples for our new staff uniform should be arriving soon and Rob’s getting ever closer to deciding on the new crockery. Would you believe me if I told you this has taken him almost a year!? Watch this space to find out which colours we’ve gone for.

A bird’s eye view

So the builders have been here for a little over a month now and last week was our most exciting yet. We had our fantastic photographer Jim Cossey on site shooting the first drone tour of the build. If you have never seen any of the amazing videos that can be shot from them, you’re in for a treat ! I must say, it’s not the usual thing you’d see buzzing over our quiet little village and it certainly got the neighbours peering over the hedge, but Jim’ll be here every month or so during the build to keep you updated and literally give you a bird’s eye view of the progress.

Behind the scenes there’s been quite a bit of action too. The site meeting last week saw a long discussion between Rob , the kitchen designer and the architect over the height of the pass – eventually they settled at 1.15 metres exactly. ‘What’s the drama?’ I hear you ask, but with the open kitchen being the main focal point of the orangery we just had to make sure the pass was tall enough to allow a good view. Talking of the pass, and the open kitchen, we may now add a third rotisserie meat to our already mouth-watering selection… lamb could well be on the cards, along with the original chicken & porchetta. You wouldn’t believe the amount of work that goes into a menu… from what’s on offer, to the design of it & the size… but Rob’s almost there with finalising it so keep your eyes peeled for the hard copy on your table soon.

Right, enough ‘droning’ on for now…!

Two weeks in

We can see wheel barrows, shovels and work boots galore! Walls have been knocked down, the garden has been fenced off and digging has started … we have holes! Okay, perhaps not something to usually get us too excited but it’s the long awaited first signs that the building work has started!

Phase 1 of the project will be the construction of a brand-new loo block (shown on the right-hand side of the plans), but before this can start new drains need to be run across the whole of the site. I agree, not the most interesting of topics to write about, but keep your eyes peeled for lots of progress pictures on social media. The garden is still fully accessible and still one of the best al fresco spots in Berkshire so we invite you all to come and have a nose around soon … we’ll keep the wine chilled!

Champagne at the ready…?

Work on our extension has officially started! Okay, so by that we mean the builders are actually on site but that’s a start right?!

After years of planning, months of designing and hours of tweaking we can finally announce that by Winter 2018 we will have a fabulous orangery, additional private dining room and gorgeous open kitchen added to our already beautiful building.

Picture huge glass windows … light, airy room … mouth-watering views of the pizza oven & rotisserie in action … all surrounded by our already stunning walled beer garden.

As you can see from the architects plans this is no mean feat, but we’re going to keep you updated on the progress every step of the way … from the Chefs travelling the country to source the right equipment, to our interior designer trawling local businesses to hand-pick perfect furniture; to the boss pulling his hair out (come on, we all know this will happen sooner or later!)
